One third of young Australians have difficulty sleeping: a cause, and a consequence, of mental health problems. More and more young people are looking for sleep stories to help them drift off, and First Nations people have countless stories that aren’t being heard.
In collaboration with Snapchat and Common Ground, we created Dreamy - a collection of sleep stories from Australia’s first storytellers.
By combining an 80,000-year-old oral tradition with a proven mental health resource, we achieved two goals: helping young Australians drift off to sleep and reconnect with First Nations people and cultures.
We worked with five incredible First Nations storytellers to create the stories, which were then turned into stunning artworks by Carmen Glynn-Braun.
Dreamy took off, reaching #3 on the Spotify AUNZ Podcast charts.
Dreamy found a second life at Parrtjima, the festival of lights held in Mparntwe (Alice Springs). Artist Carmen Glynn-Braun turned her artworks into an open-air installation, where the storytellers shared their tales with guests lying under the night sky.
The stars we sleep beneath are the same stars that First Nations people have told stories under for millennia. Close your eyes and journey through lands of awe and wonder – lands that, for First Nations storytellers, are never far away.
